Former Vice President Dick Cheney, who has never been as comfortable fighting the culture wars as most conservatives, has endorsed the repeal of the Pentagon's failed "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" experiment.
This is rather a big deal. Cheney may not be a military man himself — he diligently collected five deferments while avoiding the draft during the Vietnam War, famously declaring that he had "other priorities — but he is a former Secretary of Defense who them took work as the top executive of one of the country's primary defense contractors. That makes him about as central a player in the military-industrial complex as you'll find.
So what does Cheney say about the push to scrap the rules that allowed gays and lesbians to serve in the military so long as they remained, for all intents and purposes, closeted?

Cleveland's anti-discrimination laws will grow to protect transgender citizens under an ordinance passed Monday by City Council.
Existing city codes prohibit businesses from denying jobs or housing to citizens for reasons of age, race, religion or sexual orientation.
Activists in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community had lobbied for more than a year to include gender identity and expression.
The unanimous vote was the latest step the council has taken to demonstrate a more tolerant atmosphere -- one that helped the city land the 2014 Gay Games, an international competition.

A federal judge ordered the Obama administration to abide by his ruling and provide health benefits for the female spouse of a lesbian federal employee.
The case concerns an employee of the San Francisco-based court, Karen Golinski, who married Amy Cunninghis in the six month period when gay and lesbian families in California enjoyed marriage equality, reported the San Francisco Chronicle on Nov. 20. Though the anti-gay ballot initiative Proposition 8 stripped marriage rights from gays in California, a subsequent ruling by the state’s supreme court upheld the legal marriage status of the 18,000 families that had wed prior to the narrow approval of the measure at the ballot box.
