A preschooler at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic School in Boulder, Colo., won’t be allowed to attend kindergarten there next fall because her parents are lesbians, according to ABC 7 News in Denver.

The Catholic Church teaches that marriage "can only occur between a man and a woman," Denver Archbishop Charles Chaput said in a statement.

"If parents don’t respect the beliefs of the Church, or live in a manner that openly rejects those beliefs, then partnering with those parents becomes very difficult, if not impossible," the archbishop said in his statement.

The couple, who live in Boulder and have two children, were told by the Catholic school that their older child, whom they were signing up for kindergarten for next fall, could attend kindergarten but not continue into first grade the following year. The younger child, meanwhile, could finish preschool but she could not enter the school’s kindergarten, according to the archbishop’s statement.

Protesters at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church last Sunday mostly stood silently and held signs, according to ABC News. One sign read, "God loves all people."

The church’s pastor, Father Bill Breslin, addressed the issue in his sermon.

Dave Ensign, president of the board of directors of Boulder Pride, a gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender organization, told ABC: "He feels like it’s a calling to be strict with upholding the Catholic principles."
