In a runoff election on Dec. 1, Simone Bell was elected to the Georgia State House.

The Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund reported that she will be the first openly lesbian African-American state legislator in U.S. history.

In Atlanta, voters elected Alex Wan, who will become the city’s first openly gay man and first Asian-American member of the city council.

Victory Fund endorsed both candidates. Out of 79 candidates endorsed, 52 of them won their races.

Three additional Victory Fund endorsed candidates’ races will be decided next week. On Dec. 12, Annise Parker is running for mayor of Houston and a gay and a lesbian candidate are in the runoff for city council seats.
