The colours of the rainbow have been raised above Sydney's Town Hall to celebrate the start of 2010 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras festival.
The red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet striped `gay' flag is regularly displayed along Oxford Street in Darlinghurst during Mardi Gras celebrations, but was for the first time hoisted above Town Hall on Friday.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the flag symbolised Sydney's unwavering support for gay and lesbian communities.
Some Black Hawk County judges and magistrates have stopped performing civil ceremonies to avoid marrying gays and lesbians. This is
a result of the legalization of same-sex marriages by the Iowa Supreme Court.
However, Black Hawk Associate Judge Nathan Callahan performs such ceremonies. He and others like him say taking part in the services have opened their eyes to the struggles gay and lesbian couples face.
