The colours of the rainbow have been raised above Sydney's Town Hall to celebrate the start of 2010 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras festival.
The red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet striped `gay' flag is regularly displayed along Oxford Street in Darlinghurst during Mardi Gras celebrations, but was for the first time hoisted above Town Hall on Friday.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the flag symbolised Sydney's unwavering support for gay and lesbian communities.
"As we raise this flag today, it is my hope that it will be recognised as a sign of the rich, diverse, tolerant and harmonious city that we all strive to create," she told a small crowd gathered at the foot of Town Hall's steps.
The City of Sydney Council is the major sponsor of the festival and it's iconic parade.
Now in its 33rd year, the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade will start at about 8pm (AEDT) on Saturday, February 27.
